Jerzu is a very special Arabian in our barn. He was named after my late dad's birthplace, a small village in Sardinia, in the Ogliastra (OG) province, located in the east-central area of the island. The village of Jerzu is small, with a population of only about 3200, located in the mountains and famous for its wine - the Cannonau di Jerzu; a delicious red wine of high quality and fame.
Jerzu the stallion, was purchased in Germany at a show, from a German lady, who had started painting him a very dark liver chestnut with airbrush. She also customized the original casting, making him more of a desert and dry type Arabian and added two discrete bases to him, for stability, as this old resin lacks the metal reinforcement rods in his legs. The sculpture itself is rare. It's one of German icon-sculptress Brigitte Eberl's first resin editions : the "standing Arabian", which to my knowledge was sculpted as stallion, but also exists as a mare version, when the customer asked her to alter the gender. Probably less than 10 or a handful were cast, in the early 1990s, I think. We got permission to finish the paint job and since the piece was prepped to be haired, he was also haired by us with mohair, which we acquired from the best source in the USA, who also dyes the mohair by hand. It has been our first attempt at hairing a model.
Jerzu now features an incredibly rich and deep burnt liver chestnut coat with high whites, to which we added natural and realistic dark skin in oils, in the appropriate areas, so typical of this color on Arabian purebred individuals... Wanting to make him unique and striking and loving the unusual, we also added depigmented areas around his eyes and on his muzzle, complimenting the beautiful blaze and pink muzzle the seller had painted on him. The Polish Arabian stallion "Wachlarz" served as our main inspiration to do this on Jerzu.
The result is a striking lifelike stallion of over 20 years of age, now retired from breeding and enjoying his life at MirrorManor Arabians, where he is one of our gems and much loved and admired.
Jerzu's pedigree is quite interesting and was a lot of work to create... When we saw him, we instantly thought of the beautiful Arabians of old days, which were all directly imported from the desert to Sardinia in the early 1900s... Like several of our Arabians, Jerzu as well, features at least one of those famous foundation sires in his pedigree... In both the sire's and dam's ancestry, you will find Abbayan Sciarragh ® for example, who is the foundation stallion pictured on the above right, who was born in Mesopotamia in 1907, stood at stud in different breeding facilities in Sardinia from 1915 to 1934, covering 540 broodmares and producing 211 registered foals (!!!) before being retired in 1934 due to his age... This makes Jerzu a "relative" of some of our other Arabians, which are linked to Sardinia as well as a particular type, since he is a product of selected breeding done on the island for over a century and resulting into their own Arabian breed : the "AS" or "anglo-arabo-sardo" (Sardinian Anglo-Arabian), which was used a lot in racing and other sport disciplines and is a product from the cross between directly imported desert-bred Arabians to Thoroughbreds or Sardinian quality stock. A photo of Jerzu's beautiful sire Leopard ® can be found in the image gallery below.
Pairing all these qualities to the sentimental value reflected in his name, this old gentleman holds a place of honor in our Arabian collection :)
